How to protect your blog from hackers

Thursday, August 28th, 2008
There has been an outbreak of blog hack attacks recently. The main focus of the blog hack attacks is older versions of the free Wordpress blogs that are less than the latest 2.5 version release. The hackers are inserting hundreds of spammy links that point to drug, credit card and gambling related sites into the header and footer files and then making them not visible when viewing your blog page with a simple CSS manipulation.

It is rife, it is rampant, it’s a really big problem and the majority of everyday bloggers or online marketing types don’t have a clue they have been hacked and infected with spammy links that will punish their site and any site that is affiliated via links inbound or outbound.

Beefing Up Blog Security

A few things you should do straight away is to upgrade your blog to the latest Wordpress 2.5 release. For those that don’t have the patience to read through here’s a quick simplified guide:  Download and unzip Wordpress 2.5 Back-up your Blog files onto your local drive Turn off all plugins  Delete the wp-admin and the wp-includes folder on your server, Upload the new Wordpress 2.5 wp-admin and wp-includes folder, Delete the index.php file in the wp-content folder and then upload the index.php file from the wp-contact folder in your 2.5 release • Delete all top level files except your wp-config file and replace with top level files from the 2.5 release – Remember don’t overwite your wp-config file * your database info is kept in here * That’s it you are done! Just re-enable your plugins from earlier and your back up and running as per normal.

They Got IN Now What?

First step is to remove the inserted links: they normally go for the header and footer files. Next alert Google by logging into Google Webmaster Tools (if you don’t have an account then create one it only takes 2 minutes) and click the link on the right hand side titled “Request reconsideration”.

Explain in your statement that you have had your blog hacked and the links have now been removed and the site is clean. Back up your claim by detailing where the spammy links where residing in your code i.e. they start at line 200 or just under the body tag. It may seem obvious but you must consider you are presenting evidence to clear your site and your name. Finally, also add what prevention steps you have taken to help beefen up security.

Watch who you link out too!

A hacked site will have some penalties against it: in Google’s eyes you’ll be what is termed as a bad neighborhood. I removed all outbound links during this time throughout the entire site so as not to hurt anyone else from my sites temporary penalty.

To Start Making A ReaL Living With Your Blog

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008
There are many bloggers who make incomes of several thousand dollars per month from their blogs. These are not casual bloggers who only want to see their words and their name online or who just want to put forth a point-of-view, these are serious bloggers who have made blogging into a full-time (or nearly full-time) job. Here are some of the ways they make money from their blogs and ways you can also blog for bucks:

Advertising! There are many advertisers waiting for you to approach them, these are programs such as Google’s Adsense where you allow companies to place their ads . . . ads related to your topic . . . on your blog. Each time one of your readers clicks on an ad on your blog, you earn a small amount of money (a predetermined amount). A slightly different approach is used by companies such as CrispADS. With this type of service, you tell them how much you want to charge for advertising space on your blog and they will attempt to find an advertiser who will pay that price (plus a commission for the go-between company). These are just two of a large group that is expanding daily.

Blog Feeds! RSS (Really Simple Syndication) and ATOM Feeds are two of the dominant blog feeds. The object of a blog feed is to distribute every new post you add to your blog to a list of subscribers; you make your blog posts available to RSS or ATOM, people who want to read your stuff on a regular basis can subscribe to your posts and read them on a newsreader. The latest trend is to include advertising to these blog feeds and, as before, if your subscriber clicks on an ad that is included with your feed, you get some money. There are no BIG bucks here yet but its a rapidly growing field.

Affiliate Programs! Online companies have been offering affiliate programs to bloggers for years, some of the big ones are Amazon, Linkshare and Clickbank. They work by providing you a unique URL that you add to your blog. Any readers that click through to the company and buy something are providing you with a commission. Another version of the affiliate program is the “mini-mall” concept offered by companies such as Chitika eMiniMalls. The mini-mall works (like the affiliate program), through a link on your blog that takes your reader to a page with a variety of merchandise — all sales earn you a commission.

Sponsors! Large corporations are very aware of the blogosphere and of the growing number of people who read blogs and, in response, they are using blogs to advance their business interests — blogs may never replace the Michael Jordan-type superstars for corporations but blogs are already gaining many fairly lucrative corporate sponsorships. If you have a blog that is dedicated to a particular topic, e.g., digital cameras, that is published on a regular basis, that has a good readership and is recognized as an authoritative source for digital camera information, your blog may draw the interest of a corporate sponsor and you may be approached to run their advertisements for new products on a long-term basis. If and when you reach that point you know you’ve made it to the big time, professional blogger’s league.

Your Product! The methods mentioned above are just a few of the very many ways you can start making money from your blog . . . but there is a catch!

As you probably noticed every scheme mentioned and every other money-making blogging scheme you’ll find requires a great blog . . . a blog that draws hundreds of readers (as a minimum) on a regular basis. To reach this stage of readership you need a blog that offers the reader some type of unique, quality content.

If blogging is to be a money making business for you, you’ll need to treat it like a business by dedicating your time, energy and creativity to its success. Also, like any successful business, you need a product or service that is a ‘customer magnet.’ Your “product” is your content: it could be news or information or entertainment but whatever it is, it must be unique and interesting.

How to Make Money With Blogging In Three Legitimate Ways

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008
Believe it or not, but it’s actually possible to make money from blogging. One teenager has, in fact, earned $5,000 a month just from making posts on his blog!Of course, not every blogger is this lucky. It does take some skill, and some luck to make money from blogging. What it also takes is some knowledge of how exactly to generate income just by posting blogs. We will go over three specific methods of making money on your blog: Adsense, Pay Per Lead, and Affiliate Links.

So how exactly do I make money on my blog?

You do it by working with another company that wants to use your blog as a form of advertising. It sounds like selling out, right? Not exactly. The advertising can be as in your face or subtle as you want. And it can still make you money, provided you have enough visitors to your blog.

What is Adsense?

Adsense is a program offered by Google. The program, if installed, will display ads provided by Google.

How do I get Adsense?

You’ll need to go to Google.com, first. At the bottom of the screen is a link for Advertising Programs. Click on that. Then click on the link for Adsense. Scroll down on the page that comes up and click Here To Apply! You then fill out the form with information about yourself.

After 12-48 hours, Google will notify you via email whether or not your site has been accepted. When you’ve been accepted, set up your ads by doing either of the following:

If your blog is hosted on Blogger.com, you can set up your AdSense ads by going to your profile, selecting settings, template, add an element. Then select AdSense and login with your account info. Next, you’ll configure your ads and save the template. That’s it.

If you are self-hosting your blog, you’ll have to set up AdSense in more of a manual way. You’ll create your ads(which can be as small or as tall as you want) and then copy the HTML/Javascript code Google gives you. Then you’ll paste it into your blog(on the left, right, or top of the screen).

For the first few days, the ads displayed by Google will be Public Service Announcements. After the ads have been up a few days, though, the ads will switch to ads that are relevant to your blog.

How does Adsense work?

Every time a visitor clicks an Adsense ad, you get a little bit of money(usually around 30-60 cents). The amount you get for each ad clicked depends on the number of unique visitors you receive on your blog. The more visitors, the more money that can be earned.

Google will then send a check or pay you through Paypal once you’ve made at least $100 from the ads.

It is important to remember that Google will penalize you if you click your own ads, or if you ask visitors specifically to click ads. So don’t do that!

Pay Per Click

Pay Per Click is basically just like AdSense, except you don’t just work with Google you work with multiple companies. BidVertiser is one such company you can sign up with to do Pay Per Click advertising.

How do I get Pay Per Click

You sign up with a site like Bidvertiser and then follow their instructions to set up the Pay Per Click ads on your site.

How does Pay Per Click work?

It works by paying you money each time someone clicks an ad that you display. You won’t get paid for multiple clicks from the same user in the same visitor, nor will you get paid for someone simply visiting your site. You only get paid for legitimate clicks.

Affiliate Links

Affiliate links are basically links which people pay you for. Companies will actually pay owners of popular blogs to post links on their blog. You can do as much Affiliate linking as you want.

How do I get Affiliate Links?

You can get Affiliate links by searching or Affiliate Link Programs on the internet. Once you find an Affiliate link program that looks good to you, sign up for it. Then you can follow their instructions for putting the link(s) on your blog.

How do Affiliate Links work?

Like the other two methods mentioned above, Affiliate links work by paying you money each time they are clicked. You get paid for each click per unique visitor.

So now you have it, three legitimate ways to make money from blogging. It is important to keep in mind that the amount of money you are able to make depends on how many visitors your blog draws. If you draw a lot, you’ll make a lot. If not, the money you earn will be modest. But it’s still extra money, so keep doing it!

Making money using Adsense, Pay Per Click or Affiliate Link programs is easy and effective. Start monetizing your blog today!

Creating Blogs With PLR Articles

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008
You know that having a blog adds content to your company’s website, however you aren’t a prolific writer or don’t have the time.Yet is a way to realize the benefits of a blog without the large time commitment. You can purchase a set (or multiple sets) of Private Label Rights (PLR) articles to use as your blog posts. Of course you are going to want to find PLR articles that are fitting with your niche and marketing goals but that shouldn’t be hard to do. The topics covered by PLR articles are just about endless.

Once you have discovered and bought a set of PLR articles, do not post them immediately. The trick of a blog is to create good quality content on a fairly regular basis. You will have to decide (based on time and the number of articles you have available) how often each week is regular. You may decide to post three times a week or only once, either is fine as long as you stick with it. Once you have attracted a group of regular readers, they will continue to read your blog as long as there is interesting posts to read.

You will want to personalize and change every PLR article before posting it, for several reasons but two main ones. The 1st is to make sure you are posting original content. PLR articles need be changed and ideally you want your blog to be picked up by the search engines – in order for this to happen you should change 20-50% of the article making it original. The second reason to re-write the PLR article is to make it blog friendly. Most blog posts are conversational in tone and however not all PLR articles are. This is not hard to do. The research and idea is is presented, all you have to do it put it into different words (or part of it).

If you do not want to use PLR as the sole source of your blog posts, they is still a convenient way to post on days or weeks when you don’t have the time or might be away.
